It will focus on understanding common changes in toddlers’ emotional and behavioral functioning during times of heightened stress and how you can best support your child in better managing their “big emotions.” More specifically, it will discuss a set of research-based positive parenting skills that have been proven to increase positive behavior, language development and emotion regulation in children; a plan for reacting to minor misbehavior and setting limits for dangerous and destructive behaviors; and how to recognize and support your toddler during a “big emotion” with the use of a specific five-step plan for both you and your child. Dates: May 19th Time: 12:00 to 1:00 PM Cost: $10 ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: ERIKA STAPERT, PSYD AND PAIGE BELLENBAUM, LMSW Erika Stapert, PSYD is a is a New York State licensed psychologist who currently works at Manhattan Psychology Group. She received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and went on to earn her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the The Chicago School, an APA accredited program. Dr. Stapert is a certified PCIT Level I Trainer and she currently both provides PCIT as well as trains and supervises clinical psychology interns and social workers in the use of the modality. Dr. Stapert is confident in the use of PCIT to treat children with issues related to anger/aggression, oppositional behavior, ADHD, social skills delays, and attachment issues, and thoroughly enjoys helping to facilitate the significant changes that her clients make throughout the course of treatment. Dr. Stapert also has extensive experience in treating school-aged children, young adults, adults, and families with a variety of presenting issues including but not limited to anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and ADHD. She has provided individual, family and group therapy in a variety of settings including Head Start programming, a therapeutic nursery, and other outpatient clinic settings. Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW is the Founding Director of The Motherhood Center of Manhattan. After Paige’s first son Max was born, she suffered from severe postpartum depression that almost cost her her own life. Once she began to heal, she became committed to fighting for education, screening and treatment for postpartum depression so that no more women would have to suffer silently. She drafted legislation in New York State that was championed by State Senator Liz Krueger, mandating education and strongly encouraging screening of all new and expecting mothers that was signed into law in 2014. Paige has been an outspoken advocate on the issue of postpartum depression, and uses her own story as a tool for change.
